WELCOME TO BROOKHAVEN TREE CONSERVANCY

ABOUT

Brookhaven Tree Conservancy is a group of community volunteers working to protect, preserve and restore Brookhaven's tree canopy, while still allowing for thoughtful and vital development in our city.

BACKGROUND

Georgia's City of Brookhaven established its first tree protection ordinance in 2014. Since then, the ordinance was revised twice. In June of 2021, the City Council unanimously approved the latest version of the ordinance. The Brookhaven Tree Conservancy advocated for the new ordinance, which will help Brookhaven preserve the tree canopy which is a critical part of the city's character. When the 2021 ordinance was passed:

  • Approximately 90% of Brookhaven's tree canopy was located on single-family residential lots

  • We commonly lost 50-90% of trees when single-family residential lots were redeveloped

  • The changes to the ordinance reflected the belief that redevelopment can be done in a way that protects valuable trees and the character of our neighborhoods
